At Retriever Reserve, we take our coffee seriously — but not too seriously. Because let’s face it, we sell roasted beans, not launch satellites. And while our golden retriever mascot might not be a certified roaster (yet), she does know when something smells delicious.

1. Coffee Beans Start Green (No, They’re Not Envious)

Before coffee becomes that rich brown magic, it starts out as a green, grassy seed inside a coffee cherry. These little guys look more like something you’d toss in a salad than brew into your morning motivation. But with a little heat — and a lot of love — they transform into the aromatic beauties we know and sip.


2. The Beans Pop Like Popcorn (Minus the Butter)

When coffee beans roast, they pop — just like popcorn. It’s called the first crack, and it’s the bean’s way of saying, “I’m ready to shine!”
Keep roasting, and you might hear a second crack — that’s the dark roast shouting, “I’ve gone too far to turn back now!”


3. Coffee Roasting = Science + Art + Mild Obsession

Roasting is all about the Maillard reaction — a fancy name for “browning stuff until it tastes amazing.” It’s the same process that makes toast, cookies, and bacon smell so good. Basically, coffee is just science you can sip.

Yep. Coffee needs rest, too. For a day or two after roasting, beans release carbon dioxide — kind of like post-workout stretching. That’s why our bags have one-way valves: they let the gas escape but keep oxygen (the flavor villain) out.

  • Light Roast – Bright, energetic, and just a little extra (like your friend who wakes up before their alarm).

  • Medium Roast – Smooth, balanced, dependable. Basically the “golden retriever” of coffees.

  • Dark Roast – Bold, smoky, and mysterious. The coffee equivalent of that friend who always wears sunglasses indoors.

Our roasters track time, temperature, and airflow like mad scientists — but at the end of the day, it’s all about instinct. They smell, listen, and even watch color shifts to catch that perfect moment before the beans go from “heavenly” to “help me.”

There’s nothing like that first wave of roasted-bean aroma filling the air — caramel, cocoa, toasted nuts, and a hint of “today’s going to be alright.”
